It’s a new year, and as the saying goes, “off with the old and on with the new.” It’s a time for new resolutions and given the various cyber disasters experienced in the old year it’s time to make certain our data is protected going forward.
While most of us think in terms of bad people snatching our laptops thereby wreaking havoc on our lives and businesses, according to the 2014 Data Breach Investigations Report done by Verizon we actually lose more laptops, phones and tablets than are taken from us. In fact, we lose 15 for every 1 stolen.
New Year’s resolutions to better secure our laptops and mobile devices– however fervently well-intentioned — will doubtless go the way of the new gym membership to lose those last 10 pounds. People mean to be vigilant but life happens and the studies show that that laptops have a way of disappearing and taking with them access to corporate data with potentially disastrous results. It’s not the expense of replacing the actual device that keeps IT managers up at night, it’s the irreplaceable cost of proprietary information exposed.
While we lose more devices than are stolen, that’s not to say that theft is not a major consideration in how we protect corporate information. The BBC in London reported over 600 laptops and 83 iPads stolen in the last 5 years and it stands to reason that other corporations of a similar size have sustained comparable losses. Every business is at risk. Sometimes as Pogo once said, “the enemy is us” and other times it’s a real enemy.
We wouldn’t go so far as to say that individuals who lose their devices are in danger of losing their jobs as well, but we can’t help noticing that the New York Jets take such a loss very seriously indeed. Cornerback Josh Thomas had his team issued tablet with his playbook on it stolen and the next day was released from the Jets.
Recognizing that changing human nature is highly unlikely our only other option is to mitigate the potential damage from lost or stolen laptops. Fortunately we have Datacastle RED to the rescue. Datacastle RED provides enterprise protection by securely backing up all your data with the ability to remotely wipe a lost or stolen device. IT managers can breath a sigh of relief knowing that no matter how company laptops may wander or where they may go on their travels, corporate data is protected. Now there’s a New Year’s resolution that’s both worthwhile and easy to keep– Datacastle RED endpoint backup and recovery.
